What’s new – We Are Augustines

Nothing is original at this stage of the game. Almost everything reminds you of something else. The best bands, however, do so indirectly. A vague memory of someone else, a little nag at the back of your mind where you think ‘oh yeah, a little bit.’  But nothing so outrageous that you can state with certainty ‘they sound like (insert band here)’.

We Are Augustines conjure, fleetingly, some heavyweight names. The National, Nick Cave, Arcade Fire, Grant Lee Buffalo…is that even a wee touch of Mike Scott there? There’s definitely some spirit of Springsteen floathing around in the ether. But like all the best bands, they end up just sounding like themselves. Their first single ‘Book of James’ was incredible. Their new one ‘Chapel Song’ is pretty special too. If the album Rise Ye Sunken Ships (out 5 Mar) is as consistent, we’ll already have our album of the year.
