Gig Preview – Augustines

We are Augustines_035Gordon Reid looks up to the towering majesty that is Augustines ahead of their show in Glasgow this week.
Almost two years ago to the day the Mrs left me a note attached to the compute . It was a simple instruction.
‘Wake the PC up and listen to the song that I’ve left on YouTube’.
That song was “ Book of James “ (a haunting song about something that we can all hope never to go through) , the band were WE ARE AUGUSTINES and my Mrs has impeccable taste in music.

I ordered the album Rise Ye Sunken Ships  and got down to finding out where and when they were playing Scotland. I was once again behind the times as the good lady had already bought tickets for a gig at The Captains Rest on Great Western Road. I`m sure many of you will have known it and you`ll be aware that you could hardly swing a cat in there. As it became obvious that the demand for ticket far outweighed supply the gig was switched to the slightly larger ABC 2 on Sauchiehall St.
We met up with some friends before the show (and the editor of this very site) and gathered in what was a packed room with an expectant crowd. The support act were a couple of lads from Seattle who had a Black Keys thing going on. Stood at the back of the place stood the We Are Augustines watching amongst the crowd, I`m pretty sure it would be the last time they were able to do that in Scotland.
Since then they have played TITP and sold out the Arches, dropped the We Are from their name to return to their original AUGUSTINES name and released a belter of a second album. The eponymous effort picks up the baton and is as powerful and emotive as Rise, with lyrics that seem to sweat  pain out of every pore. Something booted this band in the head and its amazing the creative forces that can be released by heartache and tragedy. The sense of loss epitomised by “Cruel City”.
HEY DON`T HIDE YOUR EYES
I`LL STILL REACH FOR YOU IN THE DARK
HEY I MISS YOUR SKIN
I`LL STILL REACH FOR YOU IN THE DARK
We`ve all been there, big chap, but as we`re Scottish we channel that emotion into drinking. The haunting sound of the piano that leads into “Walkabout” masks the tune that  kicks in and that in turn disguises the dark lyrics, Christ they are dark. Look them up and play the song alongside it, let them blaze around inside your head. Its a bit of a mind fuck and I really didn`t know how to explain it without swearing.
It continues in this vein with “Kid You`re On Your Own”:
DASHBOARD JESUS IN A TAXI CAB
NEVER HEARD A WORD THE DRIVER SAID
YOU`RE IN THE BACKSEAT , HANGING ON BY A THREAD
THE SUN GOES DOWN BUT DON`T COME BACK UP AGAIN
KID YOU`RE ON YOUR OWN
The tune seems slightly menacing as if its a warning being beaten out on the drums.
In truth they have lost nothing from the first album, they have come out stronger and as hard as ever. The thumping beat demands your attention and Billy’s voice rasps out the verses with even more passion than before. These guys clearly love what they do and its infectious, it brings you along with it . I had a twitter exchange a few weeks ago with the band as they were looking for a bar that was showing the Real Madrid – Barcelona game and I gave them updates until they found one, I told them how much I was taken by the new album and couldn’t wait to hear it live . Their response was very simple , “ Its like a freight train “ and I get what they mean as it gathers pace and becomes unstoppable.
They were quoted (very roughly) as saying that they could go back to their old jobs tomorrow but the music would still burn deep inside him and they had to get it out , well you just keep doing what you are doing and you’ll never be on your own again, kid.
If there are tickets left for Friday then get your arse down to The Arches , Its going to be like a freight train.
Augustines play Glasgow Arches on Friday April 11.
