Breakin’ Up – Rilo Kiley call it a day

Joining Habitat and the News of the World in the ‘no longer with us’ file are Rilo Kiley. The LA band have officially packed it in, a move pretty much seen as inevitable since their profile began to be eclipsed by that of frontwoman Jenny Lewis.

According to guitarist Blake Sennett, the group was riven with internal issues. “I just felt like there was a lot of deception, disloyalty, greed and things I don’t really want to submit myself to,” the in no way taking-this-all-a-bit-seriously Sennett said. “I had related that frustration to music but I just thought, ‘I’m not going to put myself in that position again’, so I said, ‘Fuck that, I can’t do this any more.'”

Lewis had been growing ever more popular than the act she made her name in, and there was a belief that a band who were once genuinely that were being reduced to the status of BlondieBlokes. Her last album, a very fine collection of songs with her boyfriend Johnny Whateverhisnameis which was wonderful whenever he wasn’t on it, was critically acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic.

It’s a sad day though. Rilo Kiley at their peak were a corking band, and 2007s Under the Blacklight was considered a 21st century Rumours. We’ll be sad to see them go.
