Wickerman Festival announces 2011 line-up

To say that modern festivals are often soulless, corporate affairs is a bit like saying it always rains on bank holidays. It’s become such an awful cliché but, like a lot of clichés, there’s  a germ of truth in it. One which has avoided this pitfall is the Wickerman Festival.

Taking place on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 July at East Kirkcarswell Farm in Dumfries & Galloway, the tenth festival will feature ten stages, including the Summerisle Stage, Scooter Tent, The Acoustic Village, Axis Sound System Reggae Tent, Bass Camp, Greenman Inn, Headphone Arena, Ho Down Wendy House, Solus and for the first time the goNORTH Festival Tour Stage.

Feeder, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Hoosiers, Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club (DJ Set), The Damned, From The Jam, Utah Saints, Riva Starr, The Bluebells and Matthew And The Atlas are just some of the first names to be announced for the tenth anniversary of the festival.

Further line-up announcements and details of the additional on site entertainment will be released in the coming months.

Festival coordinator Helen Chalmers said “In celebration of our tenth year we have extended our site to include ten stages so we can offer an even greater mix of established acts and future stars for the 15,000+ music lovers who will attend”.

There is something peculiar and loveable about the Wickerman. There’s a far more laid-back vibe, without any of the pointlessly hedonistic or charged atmosphere you get elsewhere. There’s also no continual corporate reminders that the whole event has really been set up to shill someone’s product. It’s friendly and, most of all, it’s fun.

Tickets are available at the official Wickerman site.
