Weekly what’s new – The Strokes

The Strokes are not what you’d call prolific. Their new album Angles is only their fourth, yet comes a full 10 years after epoch-shattering debut Is This It? And it’s on that zeitgeist-defining record that their reputation rests. The Strokes rebooted guitar music in 2001. Many acts sell millions of records but have no lasting influence. This is not a charge which can be levelled at the New Yorkers.

However, they find themselves in a curious position in 2011. Although their debut will forever be a touchstone, the two which followed were, at best, all right. Room On Top was essentially Is This It?-lite while First Impressions of Earth was more ambitious but less satisfying. They really could do with a classic. New single ‘Under Cover of Darkness’ certainly bodes well.
