The Wednesday What’s New – The Divine Comedy

The Divine Comedy have always been a band – man – who were easier to admire than love. The permanently arched eyebrow grew tiresome really quickly, the flat-track bullying of soft targets in the lyrics became insufferable and the unbearably smug aura of the whole thing was too off-putting to get past.

The occasional flashes of brilliance when Neil Hannon left his persona at the door and just played from the heart, such as ‘Everybody Knows That I love You’, just made it all the more frustrating when he was peddling sub-music hall shit like ‘The National Express’. He was like the Pontins Scott Walker.

So it’s nice to be able to report that new single ‘The Indie Disco’ is an absolute corker. This is a live version from December last year. Anyone who reads this blog and is under 40 will appreciate what he’s on about, and there’s also a soft-focus nostalgia that is warm rather than sneering. Maybe Hannon should let go more often. There comes a point in a man’s life when you don’t always have to be on your guard.

‘The Indie Disco’ is released on May 24th.
