New to You – Johnny and the Giros

A cracking EP called Ladies and Gentlemen landed on ELM’s desk the other day from a band called Johnny and the Giros. The name suggests punk, but it’s more a marriage of electro and what we quaintly term indie. Spidery synth riffs over Gang of Four-style agit-funk guitars, it’s also imbued with that searing ambition which Scottish acts somehow seem to specialise in.

For reference points, if you can imagine Foals suddenly discovering hooks, then you’ll not be far off.  Delphic minus the slavish New Orderisms. There’s also an element of the nagging, insistent quality of later period Skids. And, magically, it’s a young Scottish band who don’t want to sound like Frightened Rabbit. This is undeniably a good thing.

They have an organic ambition, which manifests itself in a sound which is at once both recognisable but firmly theirs. There isn’t any dress-up going on here. These guys may well have a shot at it. Here’s hoping 2010 sees a breakthrough for them. Definitely one to watch. We will be.

You can hear more from Johnny and the Giros at their myspace

  2. ….and I just have and I really like them, it sounds fresh and, as you say, not like Frightened Rabit. I shall go and see them when they play in Glasgow def!

  3. hey man,

glad you like the stuff, we are in recording our single at the minute, so a bit quiet on the gig front, but have some great gigs lined up and plenty in the pipeline.

    all the best
