The BBC’s Hot Tip for 2010 – Ellie Goulding

The BBC have a ‘Sound Of…’ award every year, a sort of Indie X Factor where Auntie’s hip young wing select an artist they reckon will be a massive success in the following 12 months. Previous winners have included Mika, Little Boots and Florence and the Machine. So while you can question their artistic merit – or in the case of Florence Welch, beg of her honestly to PLEASE JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP – you can’t deny that they have gone on to make a cultural impact. Well, shift a few albums anyway.

Of course, you could argue that being handpicked by the BBC means you’ll really have to go some not to flog a few copies of your debut. You’ll get airplay, attention and a kind press from one of the biggest institutions in the country. You’ll be the chosen one until such times as they grow tired of you or you release a huge, clunking moose of a debut (not saying The Bravery here, but….well,  The Bravery.)

This years winner is Ellie Goulding and the Beeb have a right old hardon for her. Indeed, such is their breathless appreciation of her work, you’d get the impression that successfully fusing folk and electronica was akin to turning base metals into gold. this modern alchemy has, in fact, been done a thousand times before – sometimes better, sometimes worse – but be prepared for an all-out assault on your senses.

Is she any good? She’s all right. You’ll either love her voice or hate it. Here’s debut single ‘Under the Sheets’. Let us know what you think.

  1. See that Florence & The Machine cover that’s out now? She should have tried bellowing tunelessly at the end….honestly it might have worked.

  2. Isn’t it just fucking awful? It’s an all-out assault on your ears.

  3. Sadly caught it on the Jools Holland hootenany and she was just terrible….loud, tuneless and somehow redolent of a female Tony Hadley, only worse.

  4. I suspect she has a huge, hairy bush.

  5. Possibly.

Whereas La Ruex / Rueax / whatever will have an angular shaved one and Little Boots will have a Brazilian.

  6. I don’t know how she will manage it, but I suspect La Roux’s will be cut in a strange angular wedge.

my pubic topiary is a work of art, it looks like Lenny Kravitz.
