New Music Show on the Web

MattWe’re very much the types who bang on about the lack of quality music programming in the UK. When you consider the quality of written output in this country – not just us – then what we are given in the televisual medium is a little poor. Think about it; you’ve got Jools and, well, that’s about it. Yes, yes, we have dedicated channels, but these days all they seem to show are the same three videos on a loop and constant adverts for mobile phone ringtones. Not good enough.

So we were intrigued when we got the press release in about a new show being launched on mobile phones and via a dedicated YouTube channel. It would be punk rock, bypassing the established but failing medium, until you realise it’s been sponsored by Sony Ericsson. But still, railing against corporate sponsorship these days is about like railing against the weather; you might feel better for a moment but it isn’t going to change anything.

According to the press release, “Sony Ericsson’s Pocket TV will kick-off a 13 week series on Thursday June 4th – a made for mobile music-based entertainment show that can be watched on any mobile handset or online via a dedicated YouTube channel.”

The line up for episode one includes Brit Award winner Florence and the Machine back at art college, MOBO award winning number one hip hop group N-Dubz being grilled up close, and much hyped American vegans Hockey will be performing an acoustic set in a greasy spoon café in front of the locals.”

Well, fair play for the eclectic approach. So we watched, dear readers. And you know what? It’s not bad. First thing to mention – immediately, the best thing about it is host Matt Edmondson (pictured), who is very good indeed. Funny and likable, he anchors the show. It’s going for irreverence and it pulls it off. The initial interviews with Florence and N-Dubz were entertaining, and the whole thing only lasts 15 minutes, so even those of us raised on MTV and with the attention span of bored toddlers can enjoy it.

Best still, each segment is posted separately, so the viewer can pick and choose just who they want to watch. Which is good, as Hockey were on.

Overall, it’s a decent concept which, while still early days, has a lot of potential. They have some good ideas and a great host, so with some good booking they could well have a hit. The presentation is professional, and it’s a good way to spend 15 minutes. Check it out at www.youtube.com/pockettvshow
