The iPod Alphabet Game

You may remember, a while back, we played the really rather pointless but quite a lot of fun game of ‘Random iPod’ where one sets one’s mp3 player on the aforementioned setting and told us the first 5 songs you heard. Of course, it was all bollocks as everyone basically ignored the crap stuff we secretly like and instead picked out the edgy, cool stuff, but still; we had a laugh. And it being Wednesday and all, ELM thought we could all do with a bit of cheering up, so we’ve gone for a new game. Huzzah!

This one is simple; you list all the songs in your mp3player and tell us the first one in each alphabetical category. No cheating; if the first song in your little plastic jukebox is ‘Agadoo’, then ‘Agadoo’ you’ll list. Anyone whose playlist appears to be composed of obscure Scandinavian alt.pop jazz experimentalists will be cruelly exposed for the charlatan they are. And at the end, we’ll have a look at everyone’s and point and laugh at the daftest. it’s the ELM way; you know this by now. Points taken off for missing a letter, by the way. I’ll bravely kick us off;

A-Punk – Vampire Weekend
Baby I – Amy Millan
California Sun – The Ramones
D.A.N.C.E. – Justice
E.S.T. – White Lies
Face for the Radio – The View
Gardening at Night – R.E.M.
Halfhound – The Phantom Band
I’ll Be You – The Replacements
JAR Jason Andrew Revla – Green Day
Kennedy – The Wedding Present
L.E.S. Artistes – Santogold
Magazines – The Hold Steady
The Navesink Banks – The Gaslight Anthem
Obstacles – Syd Matters
Paid to Smile – The Lemonheads
Queen Jane – Kingmaker
Radiation Vibe – Fountains of Wayne
Saddest Quo – The Pernice Brothers
Taillights Fade – Buffalo Tom
Ultra Violet – U2
Vallé Mistico (Rueben’s Song) – Conor Oberst
The Wagon – Dinosaur Jr.
Yeah Yeah – Spiritualized

24/26 for ELM, with X and Z missing. I could have lied and said ‘Xanadu’ by Olivia Newton-John and ‘Zephyr Song’ by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, but elected not to on the grounds that I’m a fair and honest man and that they are both shit. Overall I think I’ve come out of that reasonably well! In fact, I’m not altogether unconvinced that it doesn’t make a decent playlist. If you wanted to analyse it, you’d have to be a sad bastard, but here goes; it appears that late 80’s/early 90’s American alternative rock acts had already foreseen the invention of the iPod and had decided to go for lots and lots of titles which kept them high up the playlist. And you thought all these grunge kids were ripped to the tits on heroin all the time? Marketing geniuses more like.

Right; let’s have a look at yours then!

    She was fit, mind.

  15. Try Armchair Apocrypha or The Mysterious Production of Eggs. Not sold on his new one, Noble Beast, so that is the one I would say to steer clear of.

  16. Downloaded ‘Armchair Apocrypha’ and it’s great, thanks for the tip…also loving M Ward and vetiver at the moment.
