Monday Mixtape – Late as fuck!!

Monday Mixtape

Hello all, Well here is the Monday mixtape, only a day and a half late. We like to be different on ELM, and our timekeeping is just part of the great and wonderful mystery that is ELM
We’ve had some technical issues which have delayed the publish of this weeks tape, but we hope it will be worth the wait.
I’ll cut to the chase and let you get listening as I’m sure you are desperate to….

Iron and Wine – Wolves
Iron and Wine is the stage name of Samuel Beam. After the success of his first album, which was recorded at his home, he has produced 2 further albums on the Sub Pop Label. This track comes from 2007 album ‘The Sheperds Dog’.

Broken Social Scene – Safety Bricks
Broken Social Scene are another of the myriad Canadian supergroups/collectives/collaborations that are on the go at the moment. the list of band member reads like a who’s who of Canadian music.

Swan Lake – All Fires
Another Canadian group stumbled upon recently. This is a great song, which might prompt you to check out some more of their music.

Taken by Trees – Julia
Moving away from Canada for a second, but staying in the colder parts of the world, here we present Taken by Trees. Taken by Trees is a solo project of Victoria Bergsman formerly of The Concretes.

The Kill Devil Hills – Did I Damage You?
A recommendation by ELM regular ‘The Real Slim Dusty’. I got about 30 seconds into this before deciding it was in. True ELM style listening.

Nirvana – The Man Who Sold the World
With the sad and frankly bizarre news that someone had stolen Kurt Cobain’s Ashes it seemed fitting to include a record of his. Although this is a Bowie song, it captures the essence of the unique sound Cobain brought to Nirvana.

Sigur Ros – Gobbledigook
This is the news single from Sigur Ros and is a slight departure from their usual style. This is more commercial than previous releases, and is dividing opinion amongst fans. Let us know what you think.

Hanne Hukkelberg – Northwind
Another recommendation from another ELM regular. This time a resposne by Bertrand D’Oyly Carte to Lykke Li’s inclusion in last weeks mixtape. Not as immediately accessible as Lykke Li in this wookie’s opinion, but it might grow on me. Despite the doubts it’s included here as we like to be nice to our readers.

Bon Iver – The Wolves(act 1&2)
Bon Iver is the recording name of songwriter Justin Vernon. This comes from his debut album, for emma, forever ago which was self produced and self released. This is probably my favourite from the album and I hope you like it as much as i do.

’til next week, Peace Out people!

  1. The kill devil hills –
would also recommend a track of theirs called “boneyard rider” for those of you ( and I know there are many ) who have ever wondered what the genetic splicing of gene pitney , nick cave and Elvis` american trilogy would sound like!!

  2. I love this site. Never even thought of listening to a band called teenage fan club (as ridiculous as this will seem to some of you πŸ™‚ ) but excellent. Just excellent.

Too many of my of my friends are just.not.interested. In music that’s new – or even just new to them. It’s not just that they can’t be bothered to look for it – it’s also that they probably wouldn’t give it the chance it deserves because it’s not been filtered through their mind enought times by commercial radio to convince them that they actually do like it. Anyway.

I check everyday, and though I don’t often leave comments, I read nonetheless. Maybe someday I’ll have a recommendation of my own, lol.

Thanks – great site, great passion, and great work.

  3. Hey Evangelisti, glad to hear you are enjoying all our hard work.
If your friends are resistant to new music make them listen to our weekly mixtape. It’ll take 30 mins of their lives and might just introduce them to something they love. If not, they can come on here and suggest stuff of their own to listen too.

Or just post abuse, that’s always an option.

  4. More cowbell cockend!

….well you did ask for it! πŸ˜‰

  5. If my friends came online and suggested things to listen to they would be utterly slaughtered. lol. Quite rightly too. I can’t imagine the verbal carnage that would follow.

Actually…It might just be funny enough to suggest it you know that? It could be the next most amusing thing than reading the posts after the kid belonging to the guardian travel writer posted his “blog”

A twisted thing of beauty if ever I saw it. I’ll work on it. πŸ˜‰

  6. Any chance of some Tiffany for next week, oh hairy one?

Failing that (and you had better not), you could keep your Nordic theme going with the etheral Finnish-singing Islaja. Very pretty, even if it probably is just her shopping list that she is singing about.

  7. Evangelisti, your friends sound like cunts, frankly. Ditch them and join our community here. It’s bitter and twisted.

  8. LO – I fucking loved Tiffany.

  9. Chucky- now there’s an idea for a mixtape, A special Cowbell Edition……….

LO- I’ll see what i can do RE: Tiffany. We’ll be dancing in shopping malls by next monday lunchtime.

For Evangelisti, you can buy the mixtape songs for 99 US cents each via links on the mixtape page, why not buy your favourites (no money goes to us incidentally) and put them on a CD for your friends to hear. Or just play them over, and over, and over, and over to them until they love them, or kill you with a blunt object. let’s hope for option 1.

  10. I am particularly fond of the excessive cow-bell work-out in the midde of Electric Sixes ” I want to take you to a gay bar”………………….

  11. Aaah – All Fires by Swan Lake – a personal favourite. great choice. Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown are other side projects of Spencer Krug – the guy who sings that track… all of their stuff is brilliant. In case you didn’t already know that.

    You probably already knew that.

  12. I didn’t actually!

  13. New Wolf Parade album just came out this week, as it happens!

  14. Did indeed…sounding like it;ll be a grower. Abrasive on first listen which is a good sign…

  15. Cheers Swineshead, it’s nice to hear that we are producing the goods.

Incidentally, I did already know that…..

    or did I?

  16. Who knows WEW….?

That new WP album is taking a very long time to settle. I’m beginning to worry that the magic’s gone.

  17. I certainly have no idea.
I will check out Wolf Parade, see what I think.

Not that you give a fuck what i think, nor should you, but if i like it, you should too.

    I’m rarely wrong.
