Dirty Rock n’ Roll – The Gutter Twins

Some things just go well together, so much so that you wonder how one got on without the other. Cheese and pickle. Red wine and cigarettes. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Some pairings are just so obviously brilliant, make so much sense and fit on every level.

So it is with the Gutter Twins, aka Greg Dulli (ex Afghan Whigs and currently the Twilight Singers) and Mark Lanegan (Screaming trees, Queens of the Stone Age.) Given their love of dirty, sexy rock which is lying in the gutter but looking, well, at the gutter it seems strange it took them so long to get together. Lanegan had been involved in a strangely wonderful collaboration with usually-annoying Scots poppet Isobel Campbell. If Dulli and Lanegan are fish and chips, Lanegan and Campbell were chocolate pretzels – shouldn’t work but did.

It’s sexy, daring rock n’roll, aboslutely soaked in darkness and with two of the best voices in modern rock complementing each other over layers of crunching guitars. They hit the UK for dates this month. Well worth checking out if you can.
