The Always Entertaining Noel Gallagher

I lost interest in Oasis’s music in the late 90’s – about the same time as the band did, to be honest – but you have to give credit where it is due; Noel Gallagher is a dude. This week he gave an interview to BBC on various subjects, most notably this years Glastonbury and a rumoured residency at the O2 arena in London.

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it,” he said. “If you start to break it then people aren’t going to go. I’m sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance. Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go ‘Kylie Minogue?’ I don’t know about it. But I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It’s wrong.”

Now, ELM’s feelings on Glastinbury are strong (see the article in General Stuff) and we tend to agree with Noel to a degree. Even if we didn’t, however, we’d still have to admire him for saying it. Glastonbury is a British Music Indie Sacred Cow; you are NOT supposed to criticise it. Now, as everyone knows, they’ve booked a headliner who in all probability isn’t likely to play (Jay-Z) and not shifted anywhere near all their tickets. At least Gallagher is being honest rather than whining about ‘bad weather’ and ‘global credit crunches.’

As for the rumours of a ten day residency at the o2 Arena, he was even more forthright; “We’ll never play the O2,” he said. “We went there to see Led Zeppelin last December and, to be honest, the gig was fantastic, but it was the most soul-destroying venue I’ve ever been to.

“Much to our manager and agent’s disappointment we came back and said we would never play there. So it means we are going to have to do 640 nights at Earl’s Court, I would have thought.

“The O2 Arena is too Americanised for me, and it’s too far away. Any gig you can get to by boat that hasn’t got a beach is wrong.”

Now that’s just fucking ace. That’s exactly what a music fan wants from a musician. So while we ate ELM towers are certainly not the biggest fans of his music, we are certainly fans of him as a bloke. Noel Gallagher – good on you!

  1. He’s a funny guy. He was on Gonzo with Zane Lowe and he was hilarious.
