£104 for a Leonard Cohen ticket

That’s the price for ol’ jowly’s UK tour. Seriously.

Now, for those of you unfamiliar with Cohen’s recent past, his ex-manager ripped him off for millions. Lenny was comfortable, but not McCartney comfortable, and is feeling the pinch, so has decided to do his first tour in forever to try to claw some of it back. Which is fair enough. But £104? Come on. That’s just insane. Neil Young was £65. Springsteen is £60. And I daresay you get a bit more action at one of those gigs.

I suppose it’s the law of supply and demand, and you know some fans will pay it, but where is this going? The live scene is thriving right now. The more acts who can get away with this, the more they will take the piss. That’s just a fact. Record companies are now trying to sign artists on contracts which include the labels getting a cut of live gates. Not known for their honourable business practices, you know they are going to push them to rip us off more. And frankly, you know that most artists will be only too happy to take this advice.

Well, it works both ways. In that case, if you are charging £104, you better play the hits. If the guy at the back shouts for obscure album track #206, you damn well play it. And one hour shows are out the window. Three hours minimum. With a break for ice cream. Which you serve.

C’mon Lenny, play the game!
