Why have people given up on tunes these days?

I went to see Foals the other week, and you know what? They were all right. Obviously tighter than a hangman’s underpants, revelling in a noisy atmosphere at a sold out venue. But bugger me if 20 minutes after the gig I could whistle one of their tunes. And surely, dear sophisticated music reader, that’s what it all come down to? The new Billy Bragg album is packed with great couplets, but if he didn’t have the melodies to go with it, surely it’s better simply printing them in a book and calling it poetry?

As for Foals, sound dynamics and all that jazz will only carry you so far; eventually you’ll have to pen something which sounds good on an acoustic guitar. Right now, that seems as unlikely as Radiohead remembering how to do it.
